Probably the most useless and self-defeating thing you can do for bad breath is to use a mouthwash. The more you use a mouthwash. the more you will have to use it, because once the astringency and tart taste are gone, your mouth is apt to feel “fuzzier” than ever. That’s why the mouthwash industry is so profitable.

I might add that mouthwashes, which can contain alcohol up to 140 proof (or up to 70 percent), can be dangerous if you’ve got a small =id in the house. Medical literature documents cases in which children Live come close to dying after drinking mouthwash. They only knew Tur it tasted good and that their parents put it in their mouths.

The most basic approach is to practice good oral hygiene, using the Bass technique of brushing (followed by flossing, brusshing your tongue and thorough rinsing. Brushing your tongue may feel a bit weird at first, but combined with flossing, it is essential toward keeping the breath sweet. To help clean out your mucus-laden tubes in die morning, gargle, and snuff a little warm water into your nose, too.

Naturally, if you have a festering tooth in your mouth, with diseased rums, bad breath is only a mild symptom of that pathology. In most cases, ordinary gum bleeding can be controlled by diligent application of the Bass technique and perhaps a visit to a dentist or periodontist. Extra calcium and vitamins A and C with bioflavonoids will also help. If you have a cavity, there is no alternative to having it filled.

Eating yogurt or acidophilus culture may help bad breath, and one woman told us that after suffering from “bad breath and a terrible taste in my mouth for over 20 years,” and having tried mouthwashes and “all kinds of treatments,” the problem disappeared shortly after she began taking 50 milligrams of niacinamide.

John Gerard, the English Renaissance herbalist, who can always be counted on for elegant advice, said that “the distilled water of the floures of Rosemary being drunke at morning and evening first and last, taketh away the stench of the mouth and breath, and maketh it very sweet, if there be added thereto, to steep or infuse for certaine daies, a few Cloves, Mace, Cinnamon, and a little Anise seed.”
Eating parsley and drinking fenugreek or peppermint tea are also said to help bad breath.
